Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers: The Tower

wpid-photo-20150720132321474The moment Danny could walk, he wanted to go places. The moment he could string words into coherent sentences, he shared dreams with his adopted family, always about rescuing a woman in the high tower of a remote island. His adopted parents thought he’d just too much creativity.

On his 25th birthday, he took a trip to the Caribbean. He stood on the boardwalk along with other tourists, peering out into the sea, at a magnificent tower not far from where he stood. It’s just like my dreams, he thought.

He rented a boat and braced the turbulent water to the island where he climbed a thousand steps before arriving at a great wooden door. With all his strength, he kicked it open. Inside was a young woman, her blond hair was a tangled mess, the color of her once-cyan-color dress faded, and around her wrists were thick metal cuffs. She lifted her head. Danny gasped. She was unmistakable. It was as if she hadn’t aged a day since she’d given birth twenty-five years ago. “Mom.”

(~175 Words)

I am participating in Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writer, where we write a piece between 100 and 150 words (more or less 25 words) in length inspired by the photo prompt above.
Burning Questions:

Why hasn’t she aged in twenty-five years?

There is a preservation spell cast upon the tower, preserving her age and look from the day she was imprisoned.

Why is she in such a strange prison?

She, also meaning Danny, is not from our world. Yes, they are from an alternate universe and she was framed for something she did not do. Horrible justice system back in the other world.

How did she come to our world?

I don’t know. A portal, perhaps?

Will Danny free her?

I sure hope so, before the guards come would be nice.

  1. Sweet story! The very challenge of making the trip is courageous. The burning questions are the only questions I had too. Maybe she was and alien captured by secret US military troops and put in this top secret fortress….. hmmm all kinds of possibilities!

    • Ha ha, she’s not an alien, just a woman from another world, most likely a fairy-tale one like the characters from the show “Once Upon a Time” but exactly, all kinds of possibilities. Thank you for reading. 🙂

  2. Loved the story! I loved that he saved his mother. Makes me think (realize) she was chained so her baby boy could be taken from her.

Yinglan, I appreciate your continued loyalty in participating in FFfAW challenge. I always look forward to reading your stories (and I’m sure the others do too). Thank you!

    • I enjoyed writing the story. You raised a very good question that I’ve left out in the burning question section. I think the mother took her son to safety shortly after his birth and right before her capture. Since a bond sometimes exists between a mother and her child, ultimately the child will come to the rescue.

I have enjoyed writing for FFfaw and I look forward to the prompt every week. It keeps my creativity going and it’s always a joy to read what others come up with for the same picture.

  3. Very creative story. Love that you included the questions at the end so we knew what was going on. Hope Danny can free her, how awful being stuck in a tower for so long.

  4. That was a bit of a shock for Danny ,,, not exactly the princess he was expecting. Still, I’m sure he was pleased to find his mother, and I do hope he manages to get her out of there. A really interesting take on the prompt.
