中秋节快乐!-Happy Mid-Autumn Festival!

Today is the Mid-Autumn Festival in China. Each year, this holiday is on different days, mostly because it is based on the Lunar calendar which runs differently than the Gregorian Calendar. On this night, we feast in open air while admiring the oversize full moon.

The traditional delicacy of the Mid-Autumn Festival is the Moon cakes or 月饼, my favorite. Mom often teases that because I had too much moon cake before I was born and that’s how the moon cake became my favorite delicacy. I was born two days after this holiday so you can imagine my mom stuffing her face with moon cake with me inside. 😀

That’s right, this means in two days will be my Lunar Birthday. One of the perks of being born in China, you get two birthdays and they are rarely on the same day! I get to celebrate this one and then my real one is in two weeks! 🙂

I don’t really have my favorite for this holiday since I don’t get a day off in China or in the U.S. I still have to go to school. I remember my most frustrated one though, the worst ones always makes an impression, right?

I don’t remember why I had to spend this holiday at my grandparents’ that year but I did. Right after school, my aunt came, picked me up, and dropped me at my grandparents’. That night, while everyone ate on the open-air rooftop, I had to spend it looking at the moon, trying to write an essay about me observing the moon which is hard being that I was only in third grade and don’t have a wide range of Chinese vocabulary.

After spending a long time finishing the paper, grandpa insisted on taking a look at it. “Dreadful, just dreadful.” He kept shaking his head and began scolding me.

After about an hour he decided to write it for me. I mean that’s always good that someone does my homework but the essay he wrote was completely, 100%, out of topic. I was supposed to write about the moon, instead, he wrote about the holiday in general and the food. I wanted to tell him but I couldn’t afford another round of his scolding. It was late and I still have other homework and I still have to go home.

Two days later, the teacher returned my paper (the one grandpa wrote) with a big fat “0” on it! It said out of topic. In the end, I negotiated with the teacher to ask her to give me another chance to write another one. That was the worst Mid-autumn Festival I’ve ever had. Not only did I not get to enjoy the food but I got a 0 on my homework plus I didn’t even get to enjoy the moon cakes! Not that it was homemade or anything.

  2. I read a story recently with one of my tutoring students about the Harvest Moon Festival. Those moon cakes in your image look very appetizing. Did you see the Super Blood Moon in China? We will see it here in Los Angeles tonight.

    I’m glad to hear that you had many moon cakes this year, as for me, my colleague gave me one and I shared my only moon cake with Kent! Well, very often these moon cakes would go on-sale right after the Moon Festival… Hmmm, time to take a trip to Chinatown to find out I guess!

    And of course wishing you 中秋節快樂! I didn’t really celebrate this year though except for eating few slices of mooncakes and sip some hot chinese tea~

      2. My mom makes Taiwanese mooncakes, I think it’s called, 绿豆碰. It’s quite easy and good. Maybe you should try it. We made it two years ago and gifted like mooncakes but we got slightly nostalgic and a little lazy and went back to buying traditional Southeastern China mooncakes.
