Out of breath, he arrived at East 48th Street and anxiously looked around.  Something’s wrong, his instincts told him, she’s never late. Without another thought, he closed his eyes and inhaled, long and deep, maximizing the range of his senses.

Immediately, images flooded his mind. She was here waiting for him before a black SUV stopped at the curb and two men ran out and grabbed her.

He clenched his fists. Slowly, he moved to the curb and picked up the heel on the sewer grate. He gave it a quick sniff and whipped to his right. “Got you.”
