Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers: Bobby and Toby

“Can you tell me a story?” Naomi said softly as her mother tugged her into bed. “The one about the brothers?”

Her mother sat at the edge of the bed, brushed strands of hair from Naomi’s face, and smiled, “Once, there were two brothers, Bobby and Toby. They are twins but they look nothing alike – Bobby, tall and lanky while Toby’s chubby and round-faced. On their ninth birthday, their parents gifted them a two-person bicycle. ‘Now you can go anywhere you like,’ their mother said.

One afternoon, Bobby decided to take a shortcut through the woods.”

“Oh no,” Naomi whimpered, “I don’t like this part, can you skip to the end?”

Her mother smiled again, “The woods became darker and scarier as the brothers pedaled deeper into the woods and just as they thought they’d get stuck in the dark, Bobby saw a light. ‘There, that’s got to be the exit.’ Bobby said and began pedaling quicker and quicker and vanished into the light. Nobody knows where they went and it’d forever remain a mystery.”

I am participating in Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writer, where we write a piece between 100 and 150 words (more or less 25 words) in length inspired by the photo prompt above.
