Friday Fictioneers: The Tree

Leigh gasped, “I can’t believe it’s still here!” She ran toward the tree. Tim followed, confused. “This tree was planted by my grandpa when his dad bought the land in the early 1900’s. A few years ago, I got the news from one of my aunts that this tree was going to be cut down.” Leigh said, as though she’d read his mind.

“Maybe they changed of minds.” Tim shrugged.

Leigh laughed lightly, “Maybe.” She walked around the tree, touching each carving in the tree trunk. “There are so many stories to tell. I’m glad they didn’t cut it down.”

  1. Great story Yinglan. I can relate. My parents both worked on a University/high school campus. So as long as a I can remember there was this huge giant oak tree you could sit under to read etc. It was there as my Dad worked at the high school from when I was about 4, when I went to that high school, and when I attended University there up to age 22 or so.
They wanted to expand and have this new building for research as the university became not just a University college, but a full blown university in recent years with graduate programs in some areas etc. My mom still works at the University and it was pretty crushing to visit her and see that the ancient tree had been removed. The university is near the river valley, always had this huge open grassy area up front so it’s sad to impose on one their highlights as a University, being in this natural location, by building more buildings. I know the campus is expanding but it’s still unfortunate.

    Anyways awesome job!
