Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers: Hoping…

“What are you doing here?” She asks coldly as he sits down next to her.

“Beth texted me to meet her at this exact spot.” He replies with resignation. “Look, I didn’t come here to fight. I’m merely looking for a spot to sit to wait for our daughter to show up.”

She steals a side-way glance, “That’s odd.” She says, “Beth texted me too.”

“You think she set us up?” He speaks carefully.

She scoffs and shakes her head, “Same old Beth, meddle in people’s relationship.”


Meanwhile, standing on the deck of the riverboat, Beth’s eyes are glued to a pair of binoculars. “Come on,” she mutters, “sit closer.”

She wonders what her parents are talking about and suddenly wishes she can read lips. Her parents have been arguing for what feel like an eternity and recently their arguments have elevated which resulted in them living in separate quarters. Even though Beth is now an adult and living on her own, she can’t stand her parents’ constant arguments.

Therefore she stands here today, hoping…
