#WeekendCoffeeShare: Saturday in the Desert

Good Sunday morning! Thank you for joining me. Come on in for some hot or cold drinks!

Although Mother Nature has promised rain this weekend, she didn’t deliver which is awesome otherwise, it would had spoiled my Saturday.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you my week went great. I would ask about your week. Did you do anything fun? Did anything excited happen to you?

If we were having coffee, I would tell you I had a job interview on Tuesday and since then, I had been a tad anxious waiting for a response because I felt like I didn’t give a good first impression. I would tell you I got scolded by my mom by my choice of outfit.

She works in the same building, you see. So she came down to see me right after my interview and took a look at my outfit. Let’s just say she didn’t like it because I didn’t wear the outfit she wanted me to wear and the reason I didn’t do it was because I thought her outfit of choice was too wild for a job interview.

However, I finally got a response back on Friday and got a second interview scheduled for Monday. Whew!

If we were having coffee, I would tell you I took a blood test and discovered my platelets and white blood cells numbers had gone down to below normal. It’s not the first time this happened. The same thing happened two years ago when I was first diagnosed with subcutaneous lupus. Now, I can only hope it’s not coming back.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you about my two black toenails. My toenails became black and blue for no reason at all. I have been googling, trying to figure out a legitimate reason but nothing has been found related to my condition. I am going to see a podiatrist on Monday (tomorrow) and hopefully he can figure out what’s wrong with my toenails. I have a hunch though that it might be related to the low platelets.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you I, along with a group from church, went out to the west desert of Utah for some target shooting yesterday. It was so fun. My mom had been telling me she would teach me to use a gun for years but never did it. I guess I have to learn everything on my own. Anyway, I got to try out different kind of guns and discovered these things:

  1. Guns are loud
  2. Each gun has a distinctive kick
  3. Guns are heavy (even pistols)
  4. Guns make different sounds when fired
  5. It’s not easy to load bullets into a gun.
  6. It’s not easy to aim at a target

If we were having coffee, I would thank you for joining me this week and hopefully, I will be back next weekend.

    1. Well said Jim. Maye we need to lobby Ali to host a coffee in the desert some day. We could bring our toys and have a great time sharing the fun. I had some gun fun last week, but not as much fun as Yinglan had. Check out my coffee share for this same weekend. Regards.

  2. Exciting about the job. Praying you get it! That’s not helpful of your Mom, unless a company is more of an artistic company say like design (interior, webpage, or whatever), conservative always works best for interviews, even if your over dressed (that’s what I was told). So, I think you made the right choice for an accounting company.

I’m sorry about your platlets and hope that can be regulated so this lupus doesn’t return. We have a family friends’ daughter who had lupus of some kind and struggled with it for years, still does but has recovered a great deal. But you’re both in good company, Selena Gomez, the singer, has it too.

Neat church event. I have only shot guns once or twice out at a ranch. We shot these old riffles. The thing that surprised me most other than the loud noise was the kick-back. I had bruises on my shoulder until I learned to expect that. Good for you, it’s not a bad thing to know how to use them just in case.

Hope you have an awesome week. My job is going well. Good thing I didn’t have an event this week, I have been battling a head cold. Today I don’t feel great, but sometimes I get over-fatigued when I’m about to get ill, and doing too much in the days make it worse. But I took some stuff and I’m hoping to finish scrapbooking my friends wedding album this weekend. It’s for her birthday at the end of May.

Cheers, I’m going with cold water this morning, no good tea or drinks 🙂

    1. I usually go for the conservative (black-and-white) look whenever I go to a job interview. That was how I was taught in all those interview classes and I think I will stick with it.

I have skin lupus, which means it hasn’t spread to my other organs (other than skin) yet, at least according to my doctor two years ago. I’ve been taking a prescription pill everyday to prevent it from spreading. I hope it’s still working.

I think if you got bruises from shooting a rifle, then you’re probably holding the rifle wrong. When I shot a rifle yesterday, I was told the butt of the gun is supposed to be against my shoulder, not on top or anywhere else. That way, you’re not giving the gun much room to kick. He was right, I felt a kick and a thump against the shoulder but no bruise.

I’m sorry about your head cold, hope you feel better soon.

      1. Much better today. I had the flu I think. Stomach bothered me too. But now hopefully done. I’m glad your Lupus hasn’t spread. I think conservative is good. A colored blouse would be okay or a piece of jewelry that adds a bit of interest. Otherwise, I think you’re right. I probably was holding it wrong. It was a long time go too and rifle was quite old. I’m sure new ones are better.

      2. That’s great to hear that you’re feeling better.
Well, I don’t know yet, not until I get notice from my doctor.
I think it’s safer to go the conservative route when it comes to dressing for interviews than to take risks because sometimes, that kind of risks might just cost one a job.

      3. Yeah much better today. Good thing, as this weekend is going to be crazy! I have a cousins wedding shower Saturday and I work an event on Sunday from 11:30 to 4:30 for a woman’s cocktail party and silent auction. All the items are designer purses which makes it pretty cool 🙂 They are raising money for Stars, and Stars saves people who are caught in dangerous and life threatening situations with their helicopters and other medical services. They can do beyond what even the fireman can do with the ‘jaws of life.’
You are right, conservative works best for interviews. If you get hired, then you can see how everyone else dresses in the office. I know in accounting, which my mom is in as a supervisor (manager), that those who share her similar position or higher, dress very formal. Even though it’s in a university setting. Summer is a bit different, but in the year more CEO type apparel with suits, jackets, and business dresses. Those work well.
Anyways still praying for you about the job. Good luck and Enjoy your day my friend 🙂 I hope you still have time to bake your wonderful treats. You really seemed to enjoy that as a hobby 🙂

      4. Wow, that sounds like a busy weekend. I’m glad to hear you’re feeling better, otherwise, having a busy weekend will definitely not be fun.
It looks like I am going to have a pretty busy weekend myself too. I have a cookout on Friday at a friend’s house and an early hike on Saturday. I’m so glad it’s a long weekend this weekend (Memorial Day).
And I heard back from the job. They asked to start checking my reference. I don’t know whether that mean I’m hired or what but the subject of the email did say “good news” and the hiring manager said they want me to start working Friday. It sounds a little off because that’s not the same process my mom went through when she got hired by the company. Maybe every department is different. Crossing my fingers.
And yeah, I sure hope I will still have time to bake. 🙂

      5. I’m surprised they told you. Usually they check your references without asking. They want them during your first interview or attached to your initial resume. I’m sure yours will have good things to say. I think it’s a good thing b/c it means they want to know more about you, you’re not just another applicant. Cheers have a fun weekend!

      6. I thought maybe it was the company policy since it’s a large company compared to the smaller ones I usually work with. I think I will have a better weekend now because I got the good news today. 🙂

  3. Best of luck with your interview! Good for you learning how to shoot. I took private lessons with a Marine, before moving to a very rural area, a few years ago. It made me feel safer. Have a great new week!

  4. Hi Yinglan. I am so thrilled for you getting to go out and learning how to shoot. I too am a shooter and even have been trained in how to teach others. I often work with a woman who arranges classes for other women and greatly enjoy teaching her students. The only thing that makes me nuts is how new women shooters almost always shoot better than men. It’s frustrating because we like to shoot more than most women. But facts are facts. Anyway – I’m glad you had a good experience and hope you keep it up. Jim and I can be your virtual shooting buddies. Anytime you have a question – send it our way. Now you know that TV and movies make it look easy, but shooting well is far from easy. I can offer some help, but there is no substitute for good training and practice. My coffee share for last weekend had a bit of gun use, but I think you had much more fun than I did. Blessings and best wishes for that next job. I pray that there’s a great job match in your near future. Warmest regards. Gary

    1. Hi Gary, shooting a gun is definitely not an easy task and tv shows and movies made it look so easy and light. I think there’s just something about women that make them better shooters than men. 😀 What you do is fascinating and I think I will have to learn more about guns one day like how to load bullets and how to pull the trigger, etc. Thanks for dropping by.
