Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers: The Prince and the Pauper

“What do you think, babe?” I asked my husband as I lifted my leg.

He smiled, “Red looks good on you, darling.”

I smiled back. It hadn’t always been this way, where we spend our days browsing from store to store, trying on western clothes and shoes with someone waiting on you. Three years ago, I was no more than a girl in ratty old clothes. Back then, I spent my days beneath the hot sun sowing seeds and loosening the soil with a hoe. I was envious of anyone that were even remotely educated.

Then I met Charles. He had just returned from studying overseas in Europe. When I later asked him what a rich city boy like him was doing in rural China, he told me visiting rural Europe was his favorite part of the oversea experience and wondered if rural China was in any way similar. Obviously not.

Long story short, I became his guide and gradually, we fell in love. The prince fell in love with the pauper.

I am participating in Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writer, where we write a piece between 100 and 150 words (more or less 25 words) in length inspired by the photo prompt above.
