Melanie rests her chin on her hands on the window ledge of her father’s car. She had always liked her father-daughter camping trips during the summer. It was a great way to escape the 100-degree heat even for a short time. “I’m going to miss this.” Melanie says, closing her eyes, letting the light breeze caress her face.
“Me too.” Her father sighs, thinking that in a matter of weeks, Melanie will be across the country, attending college at her dream school, Stanford. We will find a way to do this again, her father thinks, staring ahead, suppressing a cry.

When my kids moved out and then I found myself suddenly single I determined to think of my very empty nest as a way to take more vacation time and then I realized I had more vacation spots than I had ever had before!

I think a lot of parents feel this way before their kids move out but I think once it happened, the parent(s) will feel glad it happened.

It is definitely a new phase of life for sure, but there is so much to be thankful for in it.

My mum was happy AF when I went off to college. I think she realized she needed me around when she couldn’t clean the kitchen as well as I used to. Ahahahahha!
