Lens-Artists Challenge #129: Favorite Image of 2020

If I have to pick my all-time favorite image of 2020, it would be this one and it’s not because I was all alone and could take my sweet time to create this awesome landscape.

This was taken around mid-January, 2020. It was the time before the mask mandates, the restrictions, the weirdness of 2020 began. Now, it feels like worlds away. This photo was shot on Antelope Island out on the Great Salt Lake on the first full moon of 2020. I love sunset but as much as I love photos of a full sun going down, I love the seconds and minutes after even more as they lend that feeling of ephemeral.

My second favorite image of 2020 is definitely this one. This was from September 2020 when I went searching for autumn colors. This picture was taken as a happy accident. I was just snapping away that day because mom was shouting, “let’s go! If you keep snapping, we’ll never finish this trail.” That definitely pose a challenge when trying to make a memorable landscape photo.

Here is my third favorite image of 2020. Again, a happy accident. My mom and I had climbed over 1000 feet over several mountain ranges to the back of the Wasatch Mountains. The sun was in my eyes while Mom was shouting, “Don’t take any more photos. We must get going!” Blindly, I aimed and shot the final photo before packing my camera away to make the stiff descent back to the front of the Wasatch Mountains.

And I just realized, all 3 of my favorite photos were taken with my favorite prime lens – Nikkor 50mm f/1.8. No wonder people say prime lenses make the best photos.

  1. Some beautiful choices, and I definitely envy your ability to spend time with you mom. (Even if she does push you to finish up and get a move on – after all, isn’t that what mothers do?! 😀) Keep on shooting and writing – your work is wonderful Yinglan

    1. Haha, it’s actually quite difficult to spend any time with my mom. She doesn’t like still moments. She has to be on the move every second of every day. Sometimes, I envy she has so much energy. 😀 Thank you for dropping by. 🙂

  2. These are all beautiful, Yinglan – my favourites are the golden ones, 1 and 3. If we should go back – I hope we have learned something…and make a better world out of it. Wishing you a Happy New Year!
