I should’ve known, Savannah thought as she sat in the cold metal chair of a police interrogation room. She’s thirteen but appears mature for her age.
“Where’s your mother?” The cop asked in Korean, banging on the table. She understood a little bit of Korean but not enough to comprehend. The cops had picked her up in an alley after someone called about a confused girl speaking gibberish outside an eatery.
She crossed her arms, “Unless you get me a translator, I’m not answering your questions.”
What could she say anyway? My mother dragged me to Korea to ditch me?

What a heart-wrenching story. I hope she gets help soon.

I hope she has other relatives, being away from that mother would be a good thing. Good story.

Thanks, I hope so too though when I wrote this piece, I feel like there’s something bigger at work here than just a simple case of child abandonment.

I had a vague thought about child trafficking but pushed it away quickly as too horrible… although mothers have done it.

Hmm, child trafficking wasn’t on my mind when I wrote the story though it is horrible.

What a frightening scenario! I get the feeling this sort of child abandonment in a foreign country happens often in reality, is that right?

I’ve seen it in lots of tv shows and movie plots so I’d say it’s happened before.

Oh no, a tragic situation. Savannah seems like a strong, feisty character, though, so one can imagine good things in the end. We can hope anyway.

In my mind, she is a strong independent woman even at such a young age and I have no doubt things will work out in the end.

She’s a pretty cool customer for being only 13. I’m guessing life has not been full of girlfriends, sleep-overs, and parties.

Nope, those things are definitely not part of her life.
