Friday Fictioneers: Too Many People

It’s probably not a great idea for a person with severe claustrophobia to be in the middle of a crowd. I lived on a farm all my life. My closest neighbor is two miles away and closest town is 30 miles away. In fact, I didn’t even know I am claustrophobic until my best friend invited me to stay with her in the city for the weekend.

There I was, in the middle of a street market, people came and went like a stampede. Suddenly, I found myself gasping for breath. I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe. Too many people.

  1. Why do you turned your picture by 45 degrees?
Well, one gets used to everything unless one is not too old. We lived in Manhattan NYC, downtown Montreal and Berlin and now in the British country side. It took us a while to love living in a rural area. We suppose it’s the other way round as well. Isn’t it important to be open to such different experiences?
    Thanks and cheers

  2. Your wonderful story sent me to google. This is what I learned.
“Enochlophobia refers to a fear of crowds. It’s closely related to agoraphobia (a fear of places or situations) and ochlophobia (a fear of mob-like crowds).” However, that does mean claustrophobia is not the word. 🙂
I do not like crowds either, but I lack your symptoms. Well done, Yinglan.

    1. Your comment sent me to Google 😀 and according to Google, claustrophobia is the fear of confined spaces. In the context of this story, I wasn’t thinking of the fear of crowds, I was thinking of the fear of confined personal space.
I remember feeling this way just last weekend when I was seated between my mom and cousin. My personal space felt confined and it began to overwhelm me. Anyway, this was what I was trying to convey in this story.
