“Guess what?” Bonnie slaps a piece of paper on the solid wood table excitedly.

“Shh!” Ms. Sowder shushes.

Bonnie’s face flushes red with embarrassment before sinking into the chair across from mine. “Guess what?” She whispers.

“I have a feeling you’re going to tell me?” I push my bulky square glasses higher up the bridge of my nose. It’s first period a.k.a. my free period. It feels so awkward to have the free period be the first thing in the morning. 90 minutes of chill time in the library – a place I cannot recall how many hours I’ve spent sitting at the table studying, doing homework, and reading for fun.

“I got in.” Bonnie reels me back to reality by waving her letter in my face. Her letter of acceptance.

“No way, really?” How in the world did she get accepted before me? We submitted our application forms on the same day at the same time. We even clicked the submit button at the exact same moment. Is it because they accepted her and not me? How can this be? I am the valedictorian. She’s the salutatorian. We both might be Seniors but I’m actually two years younger having skipped third and fourth grades. Those grades were overrated in my opinions, like unwanted children in the K-12 education system.

“You haven’t gotten yours yet?” I shake my head. She opens and closes her mouth, as if she’s suddenly lost in her train of thought. After a moment, she puts her hand on mine and speaks softly with compassion. “Maybe it’s on its way. Who knows, maybe you’ll get it today.”

“Whatever the outcome, I’m happy for you.”
