The day has finally come. The day when Brooke would say “farewell” to the town she’s called her home for the last eighteen years. In fact, since 9 AM, she has been parading up and down Main Street in her graduation gown and cap waving and cheering, “Goodbye Auntie Jane’s grocery store, goodbye Bill’s gas station…”
When she reached Evelyn’s bookshop, however, her cheer faded and her wave stopped half-way. She sighed and approached the shop, randomly picking up a paperback and started flipping from page to page. She had spent a lot of time in this shop. It’s been her library and her source of entertainment ever since she’d learned to read.
“Hey kiddo,” Evelyn poked her head out of the door, “big day, excited?”
Brooke put the book back and shrugged, “I guess so.” Suddenly, she lost interest in leaving this town. How would she find another place that would allow her to read every book without buying a single one?
“What’s wrong, kiddo?” Evelyn stepped out of the store and walked to Brooke’s side. “Aren’t you excited to be leaving for the big wide world?”
Brooke threw her arms around Evelyn’s thin frame, “I’m going to miss you.”
Evelyn laughed and patted her on the back, “You mean you’re going to miss my books, right?”
