“So you’re really going to just go?” Shelby sobbed, “sail off into a literal sunset?”
“I’m sorry,” Thomas apologized, “you know I cannot stay here, as much as I want to. I don’t belong here.”
Indeed, Thomas did not belong in 2026, he belonged in the 18th century. He was sailing toward North America when his ship encountered a storm at sea. Battered and bruised, the ship managed to survive through the turbulence of waves and wind. After the sea finally calmed, Thomas discovered his crew had been reduced from 30 to just 10, most of them did not had the luxury of getting to stay below deck.
When Thomas spotted land, he found a very different place was waiting for him. It was a place where no one wore the old puffy rags he wore, everyone – men and women – wore floral-print shirts and loose shorts. Everyone stared at his crew as they docked, one even asked, “Ooh, is there a pirate show or something?”
“What is this place?” Thomas asked to no one in particular.
“You’re in Bermuda.” Shelby walked up to him, open her hand toward him, palms up as if she was expecting to be handed something. “Now, who are you and what are you doing in my private dock?”
“Y-your private dock? Are you serious? I didn’t think maids could have private docks.”
“Who are you calling a maid?” Shelby looked offended before shaking her head, “Whatever. I don’t care where you come from but round these parts, people pay to use my dock.”
“What do you mean? Pay?”
“I mean pay with money, you know greenbacks?” Shelby sighed, “Clearly, you’re not from around here. I’ll take whatever currency you got.”
Thomas shoved the bag of gold coins he received before he set sail toward Shelby. “I just have these, would it be what you are looking for, my fair maiden?” He bowed as Shelby took a peek into the bag.
Immediately, her eyes bulged. “Are these?” Being a part-time history scholar, Shelby knew immediately what she was looking at, but they look so new as if they had been minted yesterday, she thought before staring up at the sailors and shook her head, impossible. “You’re not from around here, are you?”
