Do you try to set a good example for others to follow?
What about you? Did you teach others good habits by showing them or telling them?
I don’t know what “setting a good example” mean. I mean I know what it means but how do I know I’m doing it? It’s not like I’m being told I’m setting a good example for so and so.
I was always told as a child, “be a good role model for your cousins.” Even a few years ago, when my cousin immigrated to the US and was about to start college, my aunt told me, “help your cousin pick a good major, he will trust you more than me.”
I’m sorry, trust me? I barely know him. Even during the 3 years in which my mom was in the US and I was in China living with my aunt, uncle, and cousin, my cousin and I rarely interacted. I’m 5 years his senior and we have absolutely nothing in common, not even our last names. So what makes him want to trust me?
It’s very hard for me to be told by the family to set a good example for my younger cousins because I don’t know what it means nor how. So whether I’m setting a good example for them, I would probably never know.

Exactly, Yinglan. People need to trust their own instincts. They (meaning your cousin) need to think about what they like and don’t like, do the research and then go get it.

Well, my cousin does trust himself, it’s his parents not allowing him.

And that in and of itself is sad.

I think by being a good person with good values, you automatically inspire others to be good. Thanks for sharing your thoughts Yinglan.
