Sunday Poser #168 – Reducing Carbon Footprint

What steps are you taking to reduce your carbon footprint?

What steps are you taking to reduce your carbon footprint? Do you think that our individual efforts car/ are making an effect?

First of all, I’m ashamed to say I’m not doing much on the car front. I still love to travel by car, especially one that uses gasoline because a) I can’t afford to get an electric car and b) the availability of charging stations isn’t as convenient as gas stations. If I were to consider a more environmental-friendly vehicle, I would prefer some kind of hybrid, so I wouldn’t be stranded somewhere with only a gas station.

I do wish I can be more help to the environment, though but unfortunately, I live with someone who doesn’t believe climate change is real and also doesn’t agree that growing my own food is better than that at the grocery store. If I am given the choice to do what I want, I would get solar panels installed for my house, install rain catchment systems for each of the gutter downspouts, and possibly convert my front and back yard into a full-scale miniature farm.

I would also compost my kitchen scraps like vegetable scraps, banana peels, and egg shells. Think of how much garbage I would be diverting from the landfill?

Right now, though, the only thing I can think of that might be helping the environment would be growing my own food in my garden and flowers for the wildlife. Another would be composting garden scraps and certain kitchen scraps when possible. The third is bringing my own water bottle with a filter when I go out and always use something more than once before tossing it away.

I’m not sure why my mom doesn’t believe in such a thing as climate change and it’s sad to know I’ll never convince her to be more environmentally friendly. Every time the topic of climate change would come up on the news, she would say that it’s something drummed up by the left-wing.

Last night, I saw a story on the news, saying the arctic ice melt is triggering more violent winter storms. Hey, you can believe what you want but I don’t think anyone can deny winter in some areas in the world are getting colder and wetter while others are getting warmer and drier. I, for one, can attest to the weird weather I’ve experienced in the last few years.
