Six Sentence Story: Hermit

“I’m not you, I’m not a hermit,” Lizzy shouted at her mother, “I cannot be stuck in the house 24/7, I need to go out and drive and see something other than these walls.”

Lizzy’s poor mother, ever since COVID, her mother has become a sort of hermit, other than going out on the weekends to get groceries and neccessities while would remain at home staring at her phone screen all day. Lizzy, meanwhile, never understood why her mother was so afraid of COVID, they live in a place where the neighbors are hardly seen and neither of them ever got infected.

“But why do you want to go out?” Her mother asked, “Where is so important that you must get in your car and head out?”

For a moment, Lizzy was speechless, she had no reason for going out other than she was feeling jittery from the coffee and irritated from the cabin fever, what do I say, she wondered, “Do I really need a reason not to want to be a hermit?”

    1. I agree, we all have a need to get out of the house whether by necessity or for fun. This is actually based on conversations between me and my mom as she has indeed become somewhat of a hermit and I often have to justify of why I need to go somewhere on the weekends.

      1. Unfortunately, no, because if I do, when I return, I’d get a lecture of going out to spend money or have fun like it’s a sin. I’m (and pretty sure no one is) never in the mood for this kind of lecture.

      2. Could you warn her that you don’t want a lecture when you come home? Try a bit more robust approach? I guess that wouldn’t work, but I’m trying to see is there a way for you to manage living with her and having your personal space…

  1. As an introvert, quarantine made me almost feral, like an animal in the shadows. I weathered it well, and did a lot of reconsidering how to spend my increasingly limited time as I age. And so, to each their own!

    1. To be honest, I, too, am an introvert but I also prefer peace and quiet. This story was actually inspired by my real life and in my situation, going out is better than staying at home because I’m happy when I’m driving alone with the music on.
