Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #327 – 5 Elements

This week’s Lens-Artists Photo Challenge’s theme – 5 elements – hosted by Sofia at Photographia, had me a little stumped, which was why I put it off (that and procrastination got the better of me) until Monday. The 5 Elements are consisted of Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Metal/wood, hopefully I will represent them well in my post.

I look at fire as something that’s good and bad. Fire can be great if one is looking for warmth but at the same time, fire can be a destroyer of things if one is not careful. I find fire to be an useful tool in the garden, especially when I am install drip irrigation. Fire is used to soften the tubing to help me connect the emitters. Without fire, I wouldn’t have the strength to shove so many connectors into the tubes.

Like fire, water has its dark sides. It can cause havoc when there’s either too much or too little of it. Like with drought, crops can die but crops can also die with floods, not to mention damage to structures.

Currently, several of my raised garden beds are under thick plastic, which water cannot penetrate. The other day, I went out to check on my veggies and found some of them not doing well. It turned out the soil was nearly bone-dry. After I gave them water, they seemed to perk right up. So see, life depends on water but sometimes, the amount of water can wreak havoc.

I am what can be called “art-deaf” – similar to those who are called “tone-deaf” but with art. I can only tell you what looks obvious to me but I can never tell you what it means.

This sculpture is made out of metal at my former alma mater. I think it signifies music with the lines on the sheet music and horns and trumpets. I’m not sure what it’s doing between the Business School building and English building.

Relating back to this challenge, seeing this sculpture got me thinking about art and how humans have started creating art so long ago and in so many forms like the world’s 7 wonders. Ancient people might had thought they built it for practical purposes but to the modern folks, those are masterpieces on Earth.

  1. Earth, water, fire, air and wood? The four are a group but why have wood? I thought about it and finally understood. it is not basic it is the added gain, for fun or just to draw it again.

  2. It’s all about the connections and how they depend on each other, which you highlighted so well on your post. Interestingly, I just finished a book about the 7 wonders that I recommend, The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World by Bettany Hughes. It answers your question…!
