They were together for almost 5 years when he proposed but she called it quits. “Let’s face it,” she said, “our spark faded.”
He glanced at the ring in his hand and wondered. Is she right? Has our spark faded? Is this a desperate attempt to continue this so-called loveless relationship?
Later that night, he met a few friends at a bar. “I’m sorry, man,” One by one, they all said, clapping on his back, “I’m sure you’ll fine ‘the one’ one day.”
He downed a gulp of beer and suddenly realized he was fine with it. He felt nothing and not because of the beer. He didn’t feel heartbroken or sad or angry. Was she right? He wondered.
A few days later, after picking up a car from a nearby rental car agency, he drove to a place he had longed to visit. On the way there, he smiled and for the first time in a long time, he felt relieved and didn’t understand why. After hours of driving, he parked the car, got out of it, and stared at the sunset for a second before breaking down sobbing. Why, he wondered, feeling heartbroken.

Poor guy! It’ll take him some time to come to terms with his situation.
Thanks Yinglan for joining in.

What a sad story. First he was numb and then heartbroken. Very realistic and beautifully written. well done.

Thank you. I know some people have a period of denial before truly process the traumatic event. I am one of those people and I’m not talking about heartbreak.
