
Elena glanced at the time on her phone, 15 minutes to boarding, she thought excitedly. Even though it’s sad to leave her friends behind, she felt giddy to begin the next chapter of her life – college. Her parents had urged her not to go so far, “What if something happens to us?” Her mother had said, “How will you take care of us when you’re so faraway?”
To Elena, this is an adventure of a lifetime and she had no intention of missing out on it. As the boarding announcement came on, she looked out at the sunrise and smiled.

Many years ago, a friend of my daughter’s won a full-ride scholarship to Harvard and a number of equally prestigious universities. Her family is Vietnamese and didn’t want her to go too far away. She “settled” for a university several hundred miles away (as opposed to thousands) and eventually became a pharmacist. Families are funny things.
