Sunday Poser #136 – Reciprocity in Blogging

Do you believe in reciprocity in blogging or do you do your own thing?

What is your opinion about this? Do you follow all the bloggers who follow you on WP? If someone comments on your posts, do you do the same? What criteria have you with respect to interacting on WP?

I agree with Sadje, interactions are typically a two-way street, whether in the blogging world or in real-life. When someone, say a co-worker or a friend, asks you something, they are expecting an answer. You can’t just give them a Like or a thumb-up and walk away. I think the same etiquette should be applied to the blogging world as well, if someone commented on my post, I will respond back whether by words, emojis, or a Like – acknowledging I’ve read your comment, liked it, unfortunately you just created a one-way conversation, which I do not know how to respond.

As for following back, I no longer do courtesy follows as I have done many years ago when I was desperate for viewership. I find that the more I write, the more people will visit. I follow bloggers based on their content, not solely based on the comment they posted on my blog. After un-following a list of blogs I no longer read last year, I now only follow blogs with interests similar to mine and contents I like.

Finally, to be honest, I need to work on my interaction. I rarely comment on blogs because I don’t believe in leaving a “good job” or “nice” in someone’s comment. It feels redundant considering I’ve already clicked the “Like” button.

That is just how I am, even in real life. I don’t say much or comment on things unless I feel necessary. I rarely ask questions. I guess it’s just how I was raised – obey and pay attention and if I understand something, figure out for myself.

I do feel I have been doing better on commenting in the last few years, though, as I worked on being vocal at work. My manager can attest to that and I feel by being more vocal in life, I am more vocal in blogging, too.
