Sunday Poser #144 – Vacations?

Have you planned to go on a vacation in near future?

I’m leaving for Japan in a little over a month and yet, we still have not done our research on where to go in Japan. Mom has been watching YouTube about Japan but all the videos are just showing where to eat and shop in Japan. Is that what people go to Japan to do? What about interesting museums and attractions?

I barely eat two meals these days. There’s no way I’ll be eating through Japan unless I’m moving a lot. Maybe I will be, who knows?

I haven’t done much research on where to go yet either. I did a search on non-touristy places in Tokyo yesterday and it’s mostly shrine, temples, and food places. The only museum that came up was the Parasite Museum, love the name, not sure I’d be interested in seeing the specimens. I feel like the non-touristy thing to do in Tokyo is to wander the back streets, take photos, ride the subway, see the whole of Tokyo on top of one of its towers, and just…get lost. I think that’s the best experience one can have in a city as big as Tokyo.

I’ve also been busy learning Japanese as mom is struggling and complaining about Japanese being difficult. Meanwhile, I think the most difficult part of Japanese is the grammar and practice pronunciation at probably at 10x speed. Mom has already told me she will be a mute in Japan. This will mean I’ll be the communicator for probably both her and her friend who will be accompanying us.

My colleagues at work have been calling this a “vacation” but I’m not so sure it is. It will be hectic, that’s for sure and since mom isn’t a fan of onsen (hot springs), I doubt we’ll visit one. She’s a germaphobe and believes hot springs are tainted with germs and bacteria. I feel like I personally need to visit one, just to unknot all my muscles and have a spa day for myself.

Anyway, I’ve already had one “vacation” back in May to the UK though I don’t know if I can call that a vacation also. So that’s two vacations this year. Anymore and I’m likely to go broke.

      1. Because our travels are so complicated by now we’d have laid suitcases and potential clothing out by now. Then we cruise through and remove non essential stuff. The bags get lighter and lighter.

      2. We find that doing it late causes us to overpack. Laying it out early gives us a good chance to remove a lot of unnecessary stuff, always reminding ourselves that we can buy it if we need it. If we aren’t traveling for any kind of work and depending on the season, we can get down to one good sized bag for both of us. That, and shoulder bags.

    1. Oh, I wish I am going to hike. I’d love to but I’m traveling with the wrong kind of people. I plan to return next year to ascend Mt. Fuji. I love to explore the nature-side of Japan though. From what I’ve read, it sounds like there are quite a bit of nature preservation in Japan.
