WQ#36: All About the Color Orange

I’ve never cared for the color – orange. I don’t know why.

Before this year, the only orange flowers I had in my garden were the orange mums. I planted these mums in the autumn of 2021 along with 4 other colors. They were on sale for 2-dollar a plant and I remember I didn’t even think twice before grabbing one of each color – pink, red, yellow, white, and orange.

I added these 4 annual orange flowers to the garden this year and I’ll admit that not having many orange flowers in the garden made these stand out.

I’d like to point out that the orange zinnias and poppies were mostly accidental. I bought these zinnia seeds because I thought the name sounded cool – Fireball Zinnia – and the poppies, well, I thought I would go with a more traditional color. The sunflower and nasturtium were accidental, too, since the seed packs were a blend, meaning I have no idea what color of seed I threw when I planted these.

I’ve mentioned the color orange is not my favorite color. My favorite color is a lovely lavender shade of purple. If anyone gets a chance to take a peek at my seed collection, you’ll notice the colors of the flowers.

I think orange is a little too bright for me, too cheerful, too much energy. I’m not sure if I want to be around this kind of person.

Anyway, I am already buying seeds for next year’s garden. Can you believe it? As I’m writing this, I’m rubbing my hands while the wheels in my mind are turning. So many planting opportunities next year.

So many new flower varieties. I bought a few more blends to save me the trouble of deciding which flowers I should buy. I’m going dark next year, as in dark colors flowers. I talking about the color black. They are quite rare in nature, you know, and I am into growing rare things. I think it should be fun.

  1. Yinglan, orange might not be your favorite color, but those orange flowers are very photogenic. I don’t know what happened to my zinnias this year. They had three beautiful blooms on them when I planted them. The blooms died, and all that remained for the rest of the summer were green leaves. Abundant, healthy, but no flowers. Isn’t that weird? I’d rather have orange. 🙂

    1. Thank you. I agree, those orange mums are quite photogenic. It’s been a weird year for zinnias. I can’t remember how many seeds I tossed onto the ground to get just 2 plants while I had so much zinnias last year.
Did you deadhead your zinnias? Deadheading causes them to fork and have more flowers.

  2. Lovely photos! I would have said orange is not my favorite color either. Orange is nice for sunsets and autumn leaves, but I don’t want orange things in my house or in my wardrobe . . . but then there are the orange flowers that are kind of winning me over! Maybe they’ll win you too!
