Sunday Poser #165 – Politics Divide

Does politics divide your family or friends?

Do you have political discussions with friends or family that can result in creating bad feelings or cause a falling out? Do you think we should discuss these issues with our family or friends?

There is a reason I don’t ever talk about politics – here or anywhere. Political discussions always create tension no matter who or what you are. Politics, in my experience, ruins all relationships.

There’s a reason why I rarely write about my paternal grandfather, because he only cared about one thing – politics. It’s the only thing he would talk about, even to me, a 7-year-old at the time. There would be no discussion of weather or food or even anything fun. Family members became afraid to converse with him because everything, no matter the topic, would be revolved back to politics.

Ever since the 2016 election, mom has become somewhat like that.

I remember politics creating a division in the family in the 2020 election. Being citizens, only mom and I have voting privileges and during that time, mom stressed how important it was not to vote for a certain candidate. In my opinion, I think it’s important we vote the candidate we feel is right for the job and no one should tell us who we should and should not vote for. Although mom’s siblings were fearful in voicing their opinions, my cousins were not. After a family dinner, the family became divided on the politics front – my cousins stood on one side while mom stood on the other.

As for me, I still don’t know which side I stand. I just know I have no interest in politics and will only vote for a candidate after doing thorough research.
