Chubby the Bear and Snooty the Monkey rested on top of the couch cushion, just as she had left it when she promised she would come back for them – her friends.
“Those two are great friends.” She said once when he asked why she sat them next to one another at her tea parties. Pouring drops of Oolong tea into teeny tiny cups, she patted Chubby the Bear on the head, “Here you are, Chubby the Bear and Snooty the Monkey. Enjoy your teas.”
She had named them the moment he presented them to her. It was as if she knew she was getting new toys before he had even walked through the door. “Thanks, Daddy!” She said as she threw her arms around him in a big hug.
“Anything for you, Princess.”
That day, right before she left for school, she had placed Chubby the Bear and Snooty the Monkey on top of the couch cushions. “I’ll be back,” she said giving them a peck on the cheeks, “Don’t you go throwing any tea parties without me.”
He chuckled as he walked her to the car, “I will make sure there are no tea parties today, Princess.” His wife would be the one to drive her to school since she had to run errands.

“If I had driven,” he now musters, “if I had driven,” he balled his fists, “if I had driven, both of them would be home right now and I wouldn’t be here talking to you.”
