She threw back the glass of wine and stormed out of the room and the apartment. She didn’t talk or say a word to anyone as she walked the 5 blocks to her own apartment. The moment she closed the door was the moment she slid onto the floor as the dam that’s been holding back her tears broke.

It was morning when the tears finally seized. Still sitting there at the door, she looked like an empty shell – void of all feelings and physically drained. It was not until her phone buzzed in the clutch she had been holding that catapulted her back to reality.

“H-hello?” she stuttered and then cleared her throat.

It was her boss on the line. “How did it go last night? Was the mission a success?”

“The mission?” She shook to clear her head, “Oh right, the mission.”

She had known it was him for months, that he was somehow responsible for the corruption in the city but couldn’t prove it. For months, she had gone undercover and had even fallen in love with him. Last night, she had gone to his penthouse apartment. He had invited her up for a meal. I’ll miss this, she thought as she savored the bites, but it’s for the good of the city.

As she took her took her last bite, she stood up to excuse herself, “Do you mind if I use the lady’s room?”

She had taken her time, taking every detour possible to get to the bathroom while planting hearing devices in objects she knew he wouldn’t look. It was the best undercover case she could’ve asked for though she did wish she hadn’t fallen in love with him. Leaving would be hard and painful, she knew but she did not think it would hurt as it did when she returned from the bathroom to find a woman on his lap.

“It’s not what it looks like.” He immediately pushed the woman from his lap.

“I can’t believe you. I thought there was something between us.” She threw back the glass of wine and stormed out. She needed that wine, to numb all the things she would feel later.

“Yes, boss, the mission was a success.”
