Friday Fictioneers: Why a Hippo?

Please Note: 100% fiction!

“What is with the hippo and why a hippo? It’s not the school’s mascot. Heck, I don’t know what school would have a hippo as a mascot.” Myra and I were sitting on the bench across from the hippo statue. It hadn’t always been there. I would know, I sit here every day.

Myra took a bite out of her sandwich. “Do you think the look on its face is shame or on the verge of blackmail?”

I tried to decipher the look on the hippo’s face but wound up perplexed, wondering what the artist was thinking at that moment.

  1. I enjoyed your contemplation about purpose.
I found something from December 25, 2017. I think they’re recruiting students for a college where they allow a hippopotamus to swim on campus on Christmas night. They’re also studying the hippocampus part of the brain:

    She’s lucubrating at night fall
    about sea monsters
    potamusly swimming
    in jelly jetsam lights
    pine needles and all

But a hip hippo studies in studio
Christmas night at her river university
having horse sense to never forget
to avoid a tree and to remember the

    1. Wow! I’ve been to a lot of school and the only school with an animal mascot was my middle school, which was a bulldog and I thought that was plenty weird. A hippo as a mascot, the sports games at that school must be interesting to watch.

  2. My local school had a severe rivalry with a neighbouring school. Their mascots were respectively, a coyote and a roadrunner. I never found out whether that was deliberate!

Gotta choose something, I suppose. Why not a hippo?!
