What do you call a Heatwave in Antarctica?

Daily writing prompt
Scour the news for an entirely uninteresting story. Consider how it connects to your life. Write about that.

Well, it may seem like an uninteresting story but it’s actually very interesting in my opinion, perhaps even life threatening.

First of all, my news is tailored for me based on the news stories I’ve read. Most of the news stories in my feed are either about movies, TV shows, gardening, or the environment in general. My feed does not contain politics because I never read those stories. The other day, I read this article from CNN about a heat wave in Antarctica.

That’s not good.

Wait a minute, it’s the middle of summer here in the northern hemisphere, shouldn’t it be the middle of winter in the south pole? There shouldn’t be a heat wave in the middle of the winter, should there be?

That’s doubly not good.

You know, I still cannot believe there are people in this world who are still so hellbent that climate change or global warming doesn’t exist. What’s even more sad is some of those non-believers are living under my roof. How can you not believe in something that’s happening, even in your backyard?

It’s been the hottest summer ever in my neck of the woods with temperatures in the triple digits Fahrenheit most days so far. Rain has been so scarce that we are yet again entering into a state of drought just as we came out of one.

These days, I can only either go outside early in the morning or late in the evening. I haven’t been able to do much in the garden because I would start coughing about 10-15 minutes later. I’ve never been affected by poor air quality until now. Maybe I’m getting old, or maybe I’ve breathed in too much bad air and it’s now affecting my lungs.

Meanwhile, the south pole is 50-degrees-Fahrenheit warmer than it should be in the dead of winter, possibly melting the glaciers, and sending water northward. I just don’t get how some people can still be so blind to see that the world is changing.

      1. Oh, I follow candidates, all right, I’m just not crazy about them like some people (*cough my mom) and I don’t go around announcing it to the world. I agree, there’s a lot on the line this year.

  1. Well, I did not know that. I know that so far according to a guy who has predicted the winner of the presidency since 1984. I remember him being on before. There are x amount of keys to keep or lose according to his system and Kamala Harris has to lose about 4 or 5 to lose her bid. So far, she’s holding all the keys together.
I had my own theories. With Trump as an opponent, she would be the natural pick. I wasn’t happy about that but then I don’t think the President is actually the guy running things. I have watched too many movies. lol

    1. The president is just one of three parties running the country, the other two are the congress and the supreme court. There are checks and balances in place to make sure no one gets all the power. Sadly, in recent years, with the 2 political parties battling it out in both the presidency and congress, the powers have become slightly skewed.

  2. I bear witness to climate change similar to you, Yinglan. I do as much as necessary outside in the early mornings because it is too hot for me after 9:00 a.m. Then I am inside in the air condition for the rest of my day. By evening, I am tired and choose to remain indoors relaxing then resting for the night.

    1. I, too, try to get everything in the garden in the mornings. Unfortunately, on most weekdays, I’m occupied with work meetings. So I’m having to have to venture out to do my watering in the evening hours.

      1. Watering in the evening would be a good way to relax the mind after a work week day around people and project tasks. Seeing what grew while you were away.

And it sounds like you would be in your quiet mind space away from your housemates, to putz around as you please.

It’s only you in your mind space. No one else can be in or see your mind space, but you. What you are hearing there is your self talking, sometimes ruminating what others have said that day Orin the past. You have all the power there in your personal mind space to say STOP: It is time for quiet and calm. If someone calls out to you, don’t look towards, pretend you cannot hear and carry en in your private mind space.

      2. I agree, I try to assess the heat damage as I water in the evenings though I never really water the entire garden in one evening. Looking at the plants is very calming for my mind.
