Sunday Poser #203 – Elderly Folks and Children

Are there elders in your family that live with you?

I was just telling my mom I got a headache immediately after helping my aunt apply for a travel visa to Japan last night, she asked me why, “It’s because of you two,” pathetic, stubborn grown-children.

Honestly, I feel like a single mother of two at the moment.

I live with 2 of the probably most stubborn human beings on Earth. I wouldn’t say they are elderly but they sure do act like a bunch of elderly toddlers. The only things they are incapable to do are get off their lazy asses and commit to learning and to life.

Like with phones, they are always complaining about the lack of storage in their phones, and yet, they are refusing to use the 1TB cloud storage that I pay for each year, saying it’s too complicated. “It’s automatic!” I told them numerous times. I’ve set up their phones to have all of their photos automatically uploaded to the cloud and yet, they still come to me asking stupid questions, like “how do I transfer from this cloud to that cloud?” I don’t know where they got the idea that they have multiple clouds. There’s is only one cloud storage.

My aunt (mom’s youngest sister) is the more ridiculous one, she just turned 50 last year, and she spends all day either sleeping or singing like a crazy lunatic. She’s become obsessed with a Japanese figure-skater that she’s willing to travel to Japan to see his show 3 nights in a row. That’s why she needs a visa, by the way, to go to Japan for a week to see his show while I’m betting you, she will spend the day sleeping away in a hotel.

A few weeks ago, my mom requested her to help clear out some weeds in the front yard, she delayed the task until almost dark and when she saw me come out to dump out a bucket of residual water, she told me she was done and handed me the trowel, and told me to put it back. “You put it back,” I said.

“But you’re young and I’m old.” She replied and immediately, I wanted to say “cry me a river, you’re only like what, 51?”

Which setup would you prefer? Would you like to live in your own home and one of your grown children move in with you to give you the support that you might need, or would you prefer to live in an old age home/ retirement community where there are people who are just like you and you’d find the company that you enjoy plus there are trained professionals who can provide necessary services when needed?

My mom and I were talking about this a few weeks ago, not long after she came home from her back surgery. “You’re taking care of me now but who will take care of you when you’re old?” My mom asked.

“Let me worry about that when the time comes.”

“Wouldn’t it be a good idea if we adopt somebody and raise him/her to take care of you when you’re old?” I couldn’t believe my mom’s raising this same idea again.

Seriously, I think forcing to grow up and handle household decisions at 16 has more than prepared me to make those decisions when the time does come when I need to decide what to do at my elderly age. Between you and me, I think I would like to be in a retirement community, just in case the worst happens.

  1. I laughed when you said your Aunt was 50 and old. I lived with my Mom until she passed this year and did take care of her. She definitely had the ability to be a pain in the butt, but I treasure the time I had with her now. Of course it is a little different. My Mom was 88. There is a great difference in being in your fifties and your eighties as far as old goes.
