Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #323 – Silence

Happy Sunday! Egidio from Through Brazilian Eyes is leading this week’s Lens-Artists Photo Challenge with the theme of Silence.

Silence is an intrigue topic. It is both my love and fear because I feel like many things can happen when the noises of civilization vanished and yet, I believe I would like to experience more of it on a regular basis.

I love to go hiking alone, particularly in my local mountains on a winter day like this.

I enjoy just focusing on the crunching of snow beneath my boots while savoring the silence of temporarily escaping the noises of civilization. This may sound silly but this kind of silence also accompany with the fear of an animal sneaking up on me.

I love to travel by way of the road in a car. It allows me the freedom of stopping alongside an empty road like this to not only stretch my legs but enjoy the scenery at 0 mile/hour as opposed to 45 or 50 mile/hour.

I only travel by plane when I’m either on a time crunch or I have no choice because the place where I need to go is separated by a vast body of water. To be frank, I would rather choose car over a plane any day – no need to go through TSA, no need to deal with hoisting suitcases up and down the luggage racks, and best of all, no need to sit in cramp seats waiting to depart and land.

Finally, I think there’s something to be said about still water. It’s silent. There’s no sound of water lapping on the sandy shore, no sound of water flowing downstream, and no sound of torrent of water falling, it’s complete silent. Ain’t it just wonderful to admire the view in silence?

  1. Indeed. It’s a rare thing and comforting when one finds it. However brief it just makes one aware of how noisy life is.
When I worked late in some jobs the air conditioner would go off and that moment is so starkly quiet without it humming in the background. It always amazed me that one didn’t hear it until one didn’t.

    1. My fear of silence doesn’t as much as facing myself as coming face-to-face with a wild animal. I remember when I was hiking alone, every snap of a twig made me wonder if a bear or a deer will jump out.

      1. I used to not fearing such thing but in the recent years, with winter becoming milder and warmer in my area, bears are not hibernating for as long and deers are coming down to the lower elevations to find food. You’d be surprised by the number of deer corpses on the sides of the highway. I don’t drive at night because of that.
