Exploring Life Without Sleep

Daily writing prompt
If you didn’t need sleep, what would you do with all the extra time?

It’s a funny thing. I was thinking of this exact question when I was reading vampire novels way back when, probably in 2013 and 2014 when vampire novel was big and I’m not just talking about the Twilight saga, which I’ve read the books multiple times.

This genre of novels was my escape back then when I was going to college full-time along with a part-time job in a local private school teaching English-as-a-second-language to a bunch of spoiled rich kids. I also had another part-time job as a secretary and translator for the parent of one of those spoiled rich kids. Now that I think about it, how in the world did I manage to read, blog, and do all those things at the same time?

Looking back at my Goodreads profile, I was very into novels about supernatural creatures back then like witches and vampires but only if those creatures were portrayed as human. I wasn’t into vampires for their blood-sucking abilities. I feel like that would be a cruel way to live life. I liked their abilities of not needing to do mundane human things like sleep and go to the bathroom.

It’s stupid, I know, but I was in college at the time, pursuing a degree in which I didn’t understand 50% of the curriculum while the other half only made a little sense to me after doing hours of Google searching. I was also short on rest due to the number of jobs I had at the time. So my imagination was a little untamed.

Anyway, at the time, I often imagined that I would be skulking in the dark if I didn’t need sleep, fighting crime (not that I live in a high-crime rate neighborhood), and perhaps, spend the night studying. I would be able to utilize my 24 hours to the max.

These days, with my energy level running at only 75-80% (according to my smartwatch) and so much to do, I would love to be able to give up sleep to complete some of the tasks I’ve been putting off like writing my next long-form story or writing a memoir or maybe pick up a graveyard shift somewhere when I get bored at these long days.

  1. Heads up for the memoir; write in the present tense.
I write mine 5 times before the editor said I had to write it in the present tense. It is quite interesting how one cannot be anything but honest.
    Best blessings for that.
But please sleep enough. It makes a big difference to well being. I used to sit up all hours but it wasn’t the best idea.
