Share Your World – Week of December 16, 2024

Is it your birthday today (or a friend, family member, anyone you know?)

I’m sure somewhere in the world, someone is celebrating his/her birthday today. That someone is just not me nor anyone I know.

What’s the worst part about the festive / holiday season for you?

The worst parts about the festive/holiday season is waiting for it to come and go. We have now entered the darkest period of the year where, if you’re in the northern hemisphere, the day length is the shortest, whereas if you’re in the southern hemisphere, you’re living the longest days of the year.

The other part that’s awful is since I’m not going anywhere this year, I’ll have to endure my mom and aunt at home. I hope I will feel better when the new year comes.

Do your Decembers have a hot, cold, or moderate climate?

December is supposed to be some of the coldest months of the year. It wasn’t the case last year and according to the weather forecast, this year isn’t looking like it either. It’s predicted to be around 50-degree-Fahrenheit (10-degree-Celsius) and sunny for Christmas, which is unseasonably warm for December. The normal is around 36-degrees-Fahrenheit (2-degree-Celsius).

Still, that doesn’t mean I don’t feel cold. In fact, I’ve been struggling to get warm. Maybe I need hot soup or a hardy stew.

Would you like to hibernate when it’s cold?

I would love that. Unfortunately, there’s quite a bit to do in the garden, even in winter. It’s mostly clean up, which I’ve been doing bit by bit each weekend when the sun is peaking, so I wouldn’t feel so cold.

Last Sunday, I scattered 2 bags of wood chips in an area of the yard that nothing would grow, then raked all the leaves onto the wood chips. Then another 2 bags of wood chips were piled on to prevent the wind from blowing the leaves everywhere. I placed an additional tarp on top just in case.

I hope to get a bag of garden straw delivered soon so I can put a layer of straw on top of the wood chips before scattering mushroom spawns onto the bed in a few months. I hope to turn this into a mushroom bed.
