Friday Fictioneers: The Promised Dance


As she closed her eyes for the last time, Susan smiled when she saw him, standing there, in his best tux, smiling and waiting for her. She was no longer in the hospital, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She and her beloved for nearly 80 years were standing in a ballroom.

“What is this?” She asked, giggling. She was no longer in a hospital gown but in a dress she hadn’t worn since she was a teenager.

He held out a hand, “You promised me a dance in heaven and this is it. May I have this dance?”
