Yuki smiled big and waved at the passengers on the boat as it passed the bridge below. “What are you doing?” Harry asked in Japanese – Yuki’s native language – looking perplexed at her action.
“Waving at the people on the boat, what else?” Yuki replied. It was her second day in Amsterdam and Harry – a British transplant – was showing her around the city. “We did it all the time in Osaka. Tourists on river cruises would wave back enthusiastically.”
“Unfortunately, we don’t really do it here.” Immediately, Yuki stopped waving, put her hands down, and the smile on her face turned into a frown.
“Oh,” was all she could say before resuming the tour with Harry.

Is that true? Is waving at strangers a public guffaw in Amsterdam?

Actually, I don’t know but those people in the boat don’t look happy but then, this is fiction, so they might be in an alternate universe where waving at strangers might be an actual faux pas in Amsterdam. 😉
