Sunday Poser #220 – Neat Or Messy

Are you a neat person or messy?

Are you a neatnik (imagine Felix in Odd Couple) or a messy person ( like Oscar in Odd Couple)? Do share your thoughts!

Ah, the age-old question in my house. My mom would often say, “Your dad was a neat freak. He’s even neater than me. I don’t understand how you are so messy.” In my head, I would think, can it be? Neat + Neat = Messy? Like 2 positives make a negative sort of thing?

I am not a neat person, like my parents but I wouldn’t consider myself messy either. I would say I’m my own spectrum of messy. I am the type of person who just hangs her clothes as oppose to folding and the type of person who rarely makes her bed.

At work, that’s a different question.

If you look at the desktop of my work laptop, it’s nearly empty. I don’t like to crowd the desktop screen of my computer with icons and files. I like to be able to enjoy the photo on the desktop background, which is usually taken by me. On my laptop, everything has its rightful folder, no file should ever be without a folder. To be without a folder is like having no home.

If you look at my photo archive, every photo belongs to a specific folder.

I’m kinda strange this way, being a neat freak when it comes to working on the computer while in a physical setting, I’m not neat at all, although I’m not (and most likely never will) at the hoarder’s messy stage.

  1. This is interesting, Yinglan. I am definitely in between messy and neat. Both my parents were pretty messy, but my dad’s mom was super neat, and my mother’s mom hoarded but tried to keep it organized. I’m more like her. But I love neat and organized. I spend a lot of time organizing – like you on my computer. I can’t cook in a messy kitchen. I can’t write on a messy desk. 🙂 I enjoyed this insight into your personality. 🙂 xxx

    1. It’s weird and I’m starting to think the “neat freak” gene occurs in every other generation because my grandfather on my father’s side was a hoarder of newspapers. My paternal grandmother was all right, though I wouldn’t classify her as either or. My maternal grandparents are not neat either. So I don’t know what’s up with that trend.🤷🏻‍♀️

      1. Could it be personal preference? We like what we like. The other thing that just occurred to me was that in earlier generations, they didn’t have the “stuff” that we have accumulated.
