#SundayStills: Early April #Garden

For the last 2 weeks or so, daffodils had taken over my front garden. Other than my vegetable beds, my flower beds are just fields of yellow.

Wow! I’m just as surprised as you are. I remember digging up and moving a lot of bulbs last year. I thought there were some daffodils in there. Maybe I’m mis-remembering things? A couple of neighbors came over, praising the flowers in my front garden. “To be honest,” I told them, “I was surprised so many flowers came up.

Meanwhile, in the backyard, the asparagus have woken up from its winter nap. More and more spears are popping up each day. I wish I can eat some, to taste and find out in what way freshly picked asparagus are better than store-brought. So far, all the leafy greens are sweeter and more flavorful than anything I’ve ever bought at the store.

Unfortunately, since this is the second year for these asparagus, it’s better to wait until the 3rd or the 4th year to pick asparagus spear because these spears are the primary source of energy for these babies. If I am to pick the spears, it would like taking away its energy, although I feel like I should at least pick the thicker spears. I’ve been told the spears must be at least the thickness of a pencil before it’s good to pick. There are quite a few of those in this 10-foot bed.

Did I mention this will be my 4th season gardening?

Do you know what the hardest part of gardening is?

Finding a place to put all the vegetables. I finally found a place for my cool-weather vegetables last night.

Things grew so slow over the winter and then when spring came, all the growth accelerated. I can’t remember when there was a time this bed had looked so full. Those heads of lettuces in the bottom left corner of the picture grew a lot while I was away on my trip and so had the carrots. Those were all sowed in around October 2024. It’s been a long wait and I can’t wait to pick those in the next few days.
