For the Unicorn Challenge…
The year is 2088 and Ferdinand is determined to fix the world’s biggest problem – food shortage.
Ever since he was a child, Ferdinand had loved playing in his mother’s garden where veggies and fruits were plentiful. Grocery store shopping trips were a rarity in his household since there’s always something delicious waiting to be harvested. Grocery stores were full of empty shelves and the food that were there could never compare to the stuff his mother grew.
“I want to study plants,” he would say when people asked what he wanted to do when he grew up, “I want to be the person to end world hunger.”
Now, at age 35, Ferdinand has devoted 5 years to his study of the plant species. He still lives with his mother and hasn’t a penny to his name. “Stop obsessing over plants.” His mother would often plead. Ferdinand would just ignore his mother.
One day, he wakes up to his mother’s scream, “Ferdinand!”
He hurries downstairs to find his mother pointing at the seedling tray, where a single plastic pot sits in the center and the lettuce seedling that germinated the day before is… no more, it’s a head of lettuce. “What the…” he mutters.
“What did you give it?” His mother asks.
He scratches his head before picking up a bottle, “I mixed this with plant food.” Have I just solved world hunger? He wonders. Instantaneously, he can see it in his mind – newspaper headers and a statue, etc. Ah yes, my very own statue.

It’s a start!

You made me smile, Yinglan.
A good story and take on the prompt.
How like a young man who thinks he has made his breakthrough to be already imagining his statue!

Thank you. I think he might had been too much of an optimist.
