Happy Sunday! John is hosting this week’s Lens-Artists Photo Challenge and we are exploring the tools of photo composition with the main focus on Lines, Colors, and Patterns.
The words lines, colors, and patterns immediately made me think of this photo I took at the Tulip Festival earlier this year. This is part of a half-circle corridor that surrounds the rose garden. I remember thinking, this would come in handy in a photo challenge one of these days. I was also thinking that these repeating arches and the colorful fabric that runs between the wooden beams overhead look wonderful.
I first saw White Sands National Park on a postcard at the visitor center. Before then, I knew nothing. I only knew the basics – there’s sand and it’s white.
The picture I saw on the postcard was of white sand with lines on the sand, creating a very pleasing pattern. Nature’s artwork, I guess. I tried to capture it while I was there. Unfortunately, the photos either came out over-exposed or the composition was off for my taste. Of all the photos, this was one of my favorites. I only wish I could find a hill where people hadn’t trample all over it.
Lastly, I want to feature this picture that features the line element. This picture was taken in 2021, before I took a class on photo composition, in which the instructor explained about the directional element in photos. “If a road curves to the left, you’ll want to make sure there are plenty of space on the left side of the photo, otherwise, it will make the photo feel claustrophobic.”
Though I’m not into putting my photo subject in the center as I am a firm believer of the Rule of Third, I feel like I made the right decision with this photo. Do you think so?

I love that opening photo, great choice for the challenge!
About your decision on the last photo: 1. Rules were made to be broken; and 2. Art is what you like!
