Three months later…

Erin was once again back in the city. She had been dreading this moment since the day she found out her parents handed her the reins to the ranch. Her apartment lease was up, which meant that it was time for her to call her parents’ ranch her new permanent home.

For the last few months, she had been mostly kept to the house, sorting out her parents’ stuff while avoiding Todd at all cost. On the other hand, Todd was either avoiding her too or he really had many tasks to do around the ranch and the farm. As much as Erin wanted to pitch in and help out, she was just not ready to face him again, despite it’s been many years since the prom and high school.

As soon as she parked her car, her neighbor, Rosy, came sauntering up with her puppy on a leash, somehow, between its lips was a flag. It made Erin wondered whether she’d forgotten a holiday. “I didn’t know you’re back. How’s the ranch?”

“It’s fine,” Erin said politely. Rosy was friendly but nosy, ask her anything about anything going on in the building and she would know. Erin preferred to keep her life private and not give Rosy more details than necessary. “I’ve just come back to pack and, you know, move.”

“So, you’re really moving back, huh?” Erin smiled and proceeded toward her building. “Well, I guess I’ll see you around.” Erin was relieved the conversation ended and did not look back as she entered the building. She was never a conversationalist and with Rosy, every word that went out of her mouth seemed to put her reputation in jeopardy because one wrong word and it would spread through the buildings like wildlife.

A few days later, with her belongings stuffed and piled into her car and no lease tying her to this place, she backed out of her usual parking space and said goodbye to the place she had called home for 5 years. Now, she had nowhere to go but home.
