What do you see #307 – Stockpiling

Continue from this story…

Two weeks later…

“Alexa, turn on lamp,” Erin said groggily. In an instant, her bedside lamp came on. Rubbing her eyes, she reached for her phone on the nightstand. The time on it was 5 AM. Dropping the phone back on the nightstand, she sighed, “What’s wrong with me? Why can’t I sleep?”

After packing up her apartment upon the expiration of her lease, she returned home to the homestead she inherited from her parents. It’s been almost two weeks since her return, yet, the boxes still sat untouched on the floor of the Master bedroom. She was never a procrastinator but for some reason, she did not want to unpack.

After a few minutes of trying to sleep, she gave up and decided to get up. In her slippers, she sauntered to the kitchen and sat at the counter, trying to figure out what to do, what to eat, and what to drink. She hadn’t had time to reload on food since she had officially moved in and had been consistently ordering and having food delivered from local restaurants. She wasn’t used to this – house-keeping duties – even though she’s been living on her own for almost two decades.

“Remind me to get groceries today,” she said to her phone to set the reminder.

She hadn’t seen Todd since their first encounter. He’s probably been busy completing all the chores around the farm and ranch. She thought and wondered if he was making the point to avoid her too, whether he felt just as awkward as she did about their encounter.

After a few more minutes of sitting and thinking, she hopped off the kitchen stool and walked over to the pantry. Her mother must had left some food, she thought as she turned on the light to the pantry. To her surprise, it was full of dry goods like pasta, can vegetables, and of course, canisters of coffee. “Mother, always stockpiling.”

Potentially to be continued…
