
The next day, sitting at her desk, Teri was a ball of nerves as she waited for the minutes to tick by until lunch – one two three, one two three – she counted the seconds in her head the same way she would if she was shuffling and dealing cards on poker night as she blew out breaths as if she was calming herself before an audition. Poker nights and auditions, she let out a mental chuckle, how far I’ve been away from those things in the last few months.
The moment the clock on her laptop screen turned from 11:59 AM to 12:00 PM, she was out of there with her phone and purse, pushing the double glass doors to the office open and speed-walking toward the elevators. She couldn’t tell whether it was nerves or excitement that was driving her but she only knew one thing – she needed answers and she needed them now.
He was already there when she entered the cafe, sitting at a table in the corner, far from prying eyes and ears perhaps. When she entered, she saw him at once, he was standing there in his navy blue polo shirt and long khakis, she walked over with the thought of, let’s get this over with, but before she could sit, he held out a hand as if he’s expecting her to shake it and said, “I should probably introduce myself, I’m Adrian.”
