“I’m quitting!”, announced Teri that afternoon when her roommate, Shelley, walked into the apartment, expected to make Shelley stop in her tracks and stare at her, but, instead, Shelley finished her entrance, and continued to her room to drop off her purse.
“Why the rush?” Shelley asked, “Don’t tell me it’s because of Harry, come on, Teri, he’s harmless,” she let out a light chuckle as she took a pan from the oven, placed it on the stovetop, and began cooking dinner.
“It’s not Harry,” Teri said quickly, perhaps too quickly, defending her decision, “it’s me,” she sighed and said a moment later, “I’ve spent the day thinking,” Shelley raised an eyebrow, “about my life, career, and…future.”
Shelley leaned over the counter, “Look, roomie, I don’t mind supporting you and all, but you need to think long and hard about this. Being your friend for so long, I know you’re dead set on chasing your dream but you gotta remember, I am your roommate because I can’t afford to live on my own and you need a roommate because you can’t afford to live on your own and if you go off chasing that dream for too long, I won’t be able to afford this place and will have to move out.” Teri was staring at her with resignation and sobriety, Shelley shook her head, feeling a tinge of regret from what she had just said, shaking her head, she smiled and continued, “What I’m saying is, don’t go looking for your career and future for too long, I’ll be here holding down the fort.”
