Sunday Poser #262 – Multi-tasking or Mindfulness

Do you believe in multitasking or doing things mindfully?

What is your usual mode of performing daily tasks? Do you concentrate on the task at hand, or do you do things automatically- without paying much attention to what you’re doing?

I am the type of person who gets distracted easily, yet, I am on autopilot a lot of the time, especially at work. I remember when I was doing billing – something I was doing for years before switching to my current tasks – I would had created 20 invoices before I knew what happened. Thankfully, I’m usually pretty accurate, still, I wasn’t being mindful.

In the last few months, however, I have been trying to practice mindfulness, particularly at work, work on the smaller tasks before going for the larger, more complex tasks, that way, I, not only, can get more done, but also feel more accomplished.

I remember when I was tackling my garden projects a few weeks ago, I had to constantly tell myself to focus on the task at hand because my brain kept finding new small tasks for me to do when I’m not yet done with the task at hand. Sometimes, my brain can be very annoying.

One thing I find helps me focus is listening to either a podcast or an audiobook. I listened to probably 3 or 4 audiobooks when I was in the midst of my garden project and it helped a lot because otherwise, I don’t think I would’ve gotten it done within the deadline I’ve given myself.
