Second opinion always matters!

Second opinion always matters, no matter what situation we’re in. I just so happens to be very insecure when it comes to trusting my own gut.

What if something goes wrong? What if I pick the wrong path or make the wrong decision? It can either lead to a surprising conclusion or it can lead to something horrific. However, I know there is one situation where I absolutely depend on second opinion and that is my health.

I know, I know, it’s my own body and I should know and I don’t need some doctor exaggerating what I have and don’t have, blah blah blah. But that’s the problem, I don’t know my own body. All I know is that it’s acting crazy and it always has.

I remember three years ago, I did an ultrasound on my thyroid gland. The doctor found a big lump surrounding the gland and told me that it might be cancer. I was like cancer? Are you serious? If I did have thyroid cancer, wouldn’t I feel like crap? But then again, I am feeling crappy.Second_Opinion-5

It turned out he wasn’t serious, he didn’t even know. He referred me to a specialist and I did another ultrasound. It turned out it was some extra protein, nothing serious. Then as my hyperthyroidism grew worse and the medication wasn’t working, that specialist told me I should either kill the thyroid or get rid of it. He said it like he was trying to sell me a product. It’ll make you feel better I promise. Yeah but I’d be depending on an expensive pill for the rest of my life.

Still, that’s a big decision, I will need to get a second opinion. So I demanded my doctor to refer me to another specialist. That specialist, who is my current doctor, told me my condition is not that bad. I raised my eyebrow at him. He told me that all I need is patience and constantly adjusting my medication. Most importantly, I don’t need to remove anything.

I stuck with his plan and sure, some days, I still felt like crap but my thyroid glands are now more normal than before. So you see, second opinion does matter.

  1. It’s going to take awhile–sounds like. I have been on thyroid medication the majority of my life. The endocrinologist got the dose right the first time and I’ve been on the same dose all these years. A couple of doctors tried to mess with my dosage and weird things happened and I gained weight, so my doctor of 15 years knew better than to change it. Sometimes it’s not the dose but the brand vs generic or the different generics. Once you get the dose right, always stick with that manufacturer and that brand or generic. Hang in there. Lucy

    1. I’m still in the adjusting medication phase. It’s very frustrating sometimes, especially with the gaining weight part. I hope my doctor will get the right dosage soon.
