Share Your World – 2016 Week #51 – Holiday Edition

What is your favorite holiday?

chinese_new_year_01
When I was growing up in China, the only holiday I would look forward to was Chinese New Year. Then after coming to the U.S., when my step-dad was around, my favorite was Christmas but after we left, I just associate every holiday as a day off or a day to catch up on things. However, lately, I have been once again looking forward to Chinese New Year because for the first time in 16 years, I’ll be celebrating in China.

What types of food is associated with your holiday?

There are lots of food associated with this holiday, more than I can begin to name. Let’s see, we have candy, jiao zi, dumpling, sesame balls, variety of seeds, etc. These pictures should paint a pretty clear picture.

Do you travel for your holiday?

Sometimes, we would travel to visit some of the extended family out in the country but as far as I know, the country is no longer country but kind of city and suburban. Other times, we let them come to us.

Is it a religious or spiritual holiday?

It is neither religious nor spiritual – unless you worship food.

Is there a gift exchange?red-envelope-photo2-l

Only for children and single people and it’s not really gift exchange – it’s people handing children and single people money. I’m still single and look like a child, so let’s hope my memory did not fail me.

How long does the celebration last?

The celebration usually lasts two weeks but sometimes longer, depends on how long the food lasts I guess.
