What are you most proud of in the last year?

Come to think of it, I was proud about many things in the last year – surviving the uncertainty that was brought on by the pandemic, having driven difficult roads, overcoming challenges in life and work. I’m proud of all those things and to pick one would be difficult. So I’m going to say, these three things are what I’m most proud of in the last year.

If you see a puddle on the ground, do you walk around it or give in to the child within and splash about?

If the puddle is small enough to leap over, I would do that but if it’s too big, then I’ll walk around it. There’s no reason to get soaking wet and drench my socks in icy cold water.

Do you feel free? Why or why not?

Sometimes. I felt free when I was skillfully maneuvering the twisty roads last week. I feel free when I’m driving but I don’t feel free when I’m at home. I think it’s because when I’m driving, the wheel is in my hands and I get to control the direction it goes, kinda like “the future is in your hands kind of thing.”

I think the main reason I don’t feel free at home is because at home, I feel like I’m under my mom’s control. Often times, that is true. I guess it’s what happens when you’re living with a control freak.

What life skills are rarely taught but are extremely useful?

Investing counts as a life skill, right?

There are all these ads and people telling us to invest in retirement. Open an IRA, a 401K, etc., people often said, but no one actually teaches how to invest, what to invest, and how to tell if a stock is worth buying. I had to learn by trial and error but once you know how to read all those charts, graphs, and mumbo-jumbo, it’s really quite a useful skill to have for life.

  1. Thanks, Yinglan for Sharing Your World! I’m glad you got to go for a drive, it sounds like you hit the mountains? Those excursions can relieve a lot of stress I think. Sorry about your mom, but often our parents think they know a great deal more than their children and aren’t shy about sharing that. You had a lot of very satisfying accomplishments and ought to be congratulated! And finally yes “investing’ is a life skill that they don’t teach. It ties in with finances and budgeting and the whole ‘money’ idea. Too few never learn good skills to cope and end up in a lot of trouble because of that. Have a great Memorial Day weekend!

    • I’m not sure if it can be called a mountain. I think it’s more like a forest. I think we have a different definition of a mountain. 😀 Thanks for posing such thought-provoking questions each week and hope you have a great Memorial Day weekend as well. 🙂

  2. What life skills are useful but rarely taught? How to cope with being alone, due to the pandemic. Or if you already live alone and had to continue to do so during the pandemic. Many people seemed to come apart at the seams because I don’t think that they know how.

Glad to see that you’re having fun, Yinglan!
