“Go to sleep, dear.” Auntie Jane said softly. “Everything will be all right.”
When will I see my parents again? Susie wanted to ask but she knew it’d do no good. Adults can only take a child asking the same question so many times and she couldn’t risk getting evicted from another relative. So instead, she nodded and spoke in a small voice, “Good night, Auntie Jane.”
As Auntie Jane stepped out of the room, Susie stared at the ceiling. She hadn’t slept since her parents disappeared and she couldn’t remember anything other than the shed and two long shadows.
