A soft knock woke me from my chance to sleep in, which I was hoping to do in order to skip Christmas. “Knock knock.” My mother saunters into my bedroom like she owns the place. She yanked the curtains wide open, drowning the room in light and blinding me for a moment.
“Mom? What are you doing here?” A better question would be how did she get a copy of my house keys?
“Your dad and I flew in to surprise you. Surprise!” She wrapped her arms around me in a tight hug and before I knew, she was releasing me from her hug and grabbing her hands. “Come on, your father is waiting downstairs. He’s made his famous pancakes.” Pancakes? Just how long have I been asleep?
Mentally shouting at my sleepy legs to move, I dragged myself downstairs and when I passed my living room, I did a double-take. Oh my gosh, what the hell happened? Why is it different than when I went to bed last night? Where did that Christmas come from? And the lights? My power bill will no doubt be through the roof. “Mother?”
Mom peeked her head from the kitchen. “Yes dear?”
“Just how long have you and dad been in my house?”
“A few hours, why?”
“Did you do this?”
Her gaze followed my finger. “That was already here when we got here. Didn’t you do this?” I shook my head. “Well, maybe Santa came and decorate your house for you.” She grinned mischievously and returned to the kitchen.
I didn’t believe in the existence of Santa Claus, not since high school. It was silly for me to believe it in such thing in the first place. Suddenly, I noticed a box in the corner, next to the tree. On the top of the box was a card that read, “Open me.” Upon opening the box, I discovered another note, “Hope this brings back fond memories. – SC”
Holy. Cow!
