#AtoZChallenge 2023 – Flora

Please note this is fiction!

There should be some kind of rule against having PE class first thing in the morning. Shouldn’t there be a resting period between breakfast and any sort of physical activity?

“Vanderbuilt, Walker, let’s go, ladies, I can walk faster than the pace you’re moving right now. I don’t have all day to wait for you to finish your mile!” Coach Pete shouts on the other end of the track.

“Then let us walk,” I mutter while huffing and puffing. Why do we have to jog when we can walk? You can betcha I can walk faster than I can jog and my thighs won’t burn afterwards.

“I feel like I’m about to die.” My best friend, Payton Walker, groans.

My legs are killing me. My lungs are killing me. Every breath I breathe is like sucking in a ball of red flames. I know, I know, I’ve heard it all before. You’re overweight, Flora Vanderbuilt. I get it. I need to lose an X number of pounds before I start to feel better. Don’t you think I know that? My effing stupid body won’t behave like a normal person. Ugh!

“Come on, Flora,” I hear a group of girls shouting on the sideline, “we want to hit the shower. We stink. Get your ass moving already!”

All of a sudden, I feel lightheaded. I try to move another step but it’s like all my strength is gone, zapped into oblivion. “Flora?” Payton’s voice is the last thing I hear before everything goes dark.
